People frequently come to the library looking for the FBIS collection of translated foreign documents. It is a little tricky to navigate, so I’m posting some pointers here.
What is it?
Full explanation of the FBIS reports, JPRS reports and World News Connection from the University of Michigan Documents Center.
Readex is the company that produces the indexes and the microfiche. They offer an online version of the 1975-1996 daily reports, to which Carleton does not subscribe. See their product description.
Where is it? How do I access it?
Carleton holds the full run of FBIS and JPRS microfiche. The index on CD-ROM is currently missing.
The U of M holds the entire FBIS Daily Reports Collection, Indexes and the database World News Collection, which contains indexing and the full-text of FBIS and JPRS reports since 1995. See their description of their holdings.
St. Olaf subscribes to the World News Collection. Carleton students who want to access this can visit the St. Olaf libraries, ask the reference librarian for visitor password to use a computer and the password specifically for this database, and use the database there.
Other Access
If you are looking for speeches from FBIS, you might want to search for a pre-existing digitized version. For example, the Fidel Castro speeches from the FBIS have been digitized into the Castro Speech Database. To find other resources like this, search the internet or research gateways for the name of the leader and terms and phrases like “digital library,” fbis, library, digitized, collection and limit the search to education web sites (in Google, you can type site:.edu into the search box to accomplish this).
