Voter Registration for Small Geographies

If you need to know voter registration for counties or Congressional districts, you’ll need to go directly to the appropriate state office. Two helpful directories that speed this process are:

  • National Association of State Election Directors
This site maintains a list of links to the offices that handle voter registration and elections for each state.
  • Project Vote Smart
Follow the link near the top of the page to Voter Registration, then Local Election Offices.  Once you select a state, you will see a list of links to every county office, or at least their contact information.

Beyond relying on state government web sites which may or may not provide much historical information, searching newspapers is a good way to find reported voter registration for small geographies.  Members of the Carleton community can search LexisNexis or ProQuest Newsstand, limiting to November of a given election year, and search for the name of the county or district you’re interested in, along with search terms like voters w/3 of registered (the ‘w/3’ indicates that the search results should include documents where ‘voters’ and ‘registered’ appear within three words of each other).
